Eastern Capri: what to see
The central part of Capri Island is where all tourists arrive by boat and start their visit to the island. Here you’ll find the town of Capri, one of the two towns on the island (the other is Anacapri, located higher up). The main port, Marina Grande, is connected to the centre of Capri by a funicular, which takes you up in a couple of minutes. This is the easiest way to reach the central part of the island.
In this part of Capri, you’ll find the main attractions, cafés, shops, and hotels. It’s a perfect starting point for both walking and guided tours. All key places are marked on the map at the bottom of the page, and below you’ll find what to see first.

What to See
Marina Grande is the main port of the island. Here you’ll find the boat dock and the starting point for all boat tours along the coast of Capri. You can choose a boat tour on this website.
Piazzetta is the main square of Capri, officially called Piazza Umberto I. It’s a popular place for meetings, aperitifs, and photos. Here you’ll find cafés, boutiques, and entrances to old narrow streets. Just 2 minutes away is the Certosa di San Giacomo (Charterhouse of St. Giacomo), a 13th-century monastery with a museum and exhibitions. It’s located next to the Gardens of Augustus.
Giardini di Augusto (Gardens of Augustus) is the most famous viewpoint on Capri. It offers a view of the Faraglioni – the rocks that are the symbol of the island. From here, the winding Via Krupp road goes down, but it is often closed.
Marina Piccola is a southern bay with a beach and a view of the Faraglioni. It’s a good place for swimming and sunbathing, especially in the morning when the sun shines directly on the beach.
Hotels in the Central Part of Capri
The town of Capri offers many types of accommodation – from luxury villas with sea views to small family hotels in the old town. Most hotels are within walking distance from the Piazzetta, the Gardens of Augustus, and the funicular. Some hotels are hidden in quiet streets where there are no tourist crowds.
Hotel prices in Capri are higher than on the mainland, especially in the high season. We recommend always reading reviews to check the real room sizes, the number of stairs, and extra fees. You can see options and book a hotel on this website.
On this page you can read visitor comments on all the hotels and compare them. In addition, you should consult:
