Pompeii and Vesuvius
Pompeii and Vesuvius are probably the most impressive places near the Amalfi Coast. Visiting the ancient city and the volcano is an unforgettable experience you can do in one day!

Why Pompeii Is So Special
Pompeii is an ancient Roman city that was completely buried in ash after the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD. Because of this, it has been preserved almost perfectly. You can see houses, streets, baths, an amphitheatre, and even frescoes with their original colours. Walking through Pompeii feels like travelling back in time.
Mount Vesuvius
Vesuvius is the only active volcano on mainland Europe. Its height is about 1,280 metres. The last eruption was in 1944, but the most famous one happened in 79 AD, destroying Pompeii. From the top, you get a breathtaking view of the Bay of Naples. You can hike on a well-marked trail directly to the crater – on clear days, the panorama is truly impressive.
