Positano
Positano is the most beautiful and romantic town on the Amalfi Coast. It’s the place you’ll see on almost every postcard of this paradise corner of Italy.
What to See in Positano
Positano is a vertical town, built on a cliff where many streets are replaced by stairways. The main attraction of Positano is the perfect harmony between stunning nature and civilisation. It's hard to believe how a town could be built right under huge cliffs!
On the map at the bottom of the page, you’ll find the main places in Positano and a walking route we highly recommend! Along the way, you’ll see many local shops with paintings and ceramic works. These shops feel like small museums, as Positano and Vietri are among the main centres of ceramic production in all of Italy. Be sure to visit the shops and art galleries, walk the narrow streets and enjoy this gem of the Amalfi Coast!
Positano is famous not only for its ceramics, but also for delicious Mediterranean cuisine, breathtaking views, and beautiful beaches. One of the main attractions is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta (13th century), which is considered the town’s most important landmark.
If you enjoy trekking, hike from Agerola to Positano along the most famous trail on the Amalfi Coast – the Path of the Gods.
Beaches in Positano
The main town beach is Marina Grande, with dark sand and pebbles. It’s 300 metres long and very busy. Next to the paid area, there is also a free section. The big advantage of this beach is its location right near the town centre. You may even spot celebrities here, and the beach offers a fantastic view of Positano – don’t forget to take a few photos!
From Marina Grande beach, you can walk to another popular beach: La Spiaggia di Fornillo (Fornillo Beach). It’s smaller and perfect for those looking for a quieter spot. The walk to Fornillo is also very scenic, passing through a tunnel by a steep cliff. Both beaches are marked on the map.
How to Get to Positano
A bus runs regularly between Sorrento and Amalfi, and this is the easiest way to get to Positano. If you are coming from Amalfi, get off at the first Positano stop – the driver usually announces it. If you are coming from Sorrento, get off at the last Positano stop (there are several stops in Positano) and simply walk down with the other tourists.
Besides buses, ferries also run between the towns of the Amalfi Coast. This is a comfortable and scenic way to travel. Tickets can be booked in advance on Direct Ferries or Ferryhopper.
Parking in Positano is very limited and expensive, so we do not recommend coming by car. It’s better to leave your car at your hotel and use public transport.
